DAVID
PEEL is a survivor from a time in history when political anarchists
were considered heroes. David Peel came from a period when people were
interested in "fighting the system" instead of joining it....
David Peel is a New York-based musician who first recorded in the late 1960s, with Harold Black, Billy Jo White and Larry Adams performing as The Lower East Side Band. Performed at the first Smoke-In Concerts sponsored by the Yippies in New York City in Central Park. ♫♫♫♫♫♫
John
Lennon mentioned Peel in the song "New York City". Lennon and his wife
Yoko Ono subsequently produced Peel's third album, The Pope Smokes Dope.♫♫♫♫♫♫
In a
memorable appearance on the nationally televised "David Frost Show" in
1972, John and Yoko let David Peel and his Lower East Side Band take
the spotlight, choosing instead, to perform behind the group while an
artist friend of Yoko’s tossed paper airplanes from the stage.♫♫♫♫♫♫
John and
Yoko also recorded and produced a composition for Peel entitled
"Amerika", the theme song for the Jack Milton film - "Please Stand By",
in which Peel portrays, and stars as a media hippie revolutionary, who
hijacks a network television van and jams the airwaves with
unauthorized broadcasts to the nation. "The airwaves belong to the
people!" The song however was never released by Apple Records.♫♫♫♫♫♫
At one
point in their relationship, David Peel, John Lennon and Yoko Ono
seemed practically inseparable - so much so that John and Yoko thought
that they should have used David Peel’s photograph as the middle
picture on their "Some Time In New York City" record label, which
depicts the metamorphosis of John Lennon into Yoko Ono. John noted that
Peel always wore round sunglasses that were a perfect duplicate of the
glasses that had become John Lennon’s trademark and Lennon took to
wearing Peel’s black leather jacket - a jacket similar to the kind that
The Beatles used to wear while performing in Hamburg, Germany, and back
at the "Cavern", a small club in Liverpool, England - where it all
began.♫♫♫♫♫♫
 His
third album, The Pope Smokes Dope, produced by JOHN LENNON and YOKO
ONO (Ignoring the objections by "certain" former members of The
Beatles, John and Yoko still signed Peel to Apple Records), propelled
him into celebrity status, given the extremely rare
honor/dishonor of being banned by every country in the world, except
America and Canada.♫♫♫♫♫♫
Concerned
about major label censorship, Peel
founded Orange Records to release his own recordings and also those of
other independent artists such as: GG Allin & The Jabbers and
Mozarts People.♫♫♫♫♫♫
David Peel
has performed on a wide variety of
venues with such acts as: THE PLASTIC ONO BAND, CHUCK BERRY, IGGY POP
& THE STOOGES, EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER, FRANK ZAPPA
& THE
MOTHERS
OF INVENTION, THE DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET, ROD STEWART, MC5, STEVIE
WONDER, and ALICE COOPER, as well as appearing on THE DAVID FROST SHOW
and THE DICK CAVETT SHOW.♫♫♫♫♫♫
