Jo Gunne Facts
So...Where's
the Show - After the erratic and self-consciously weird Jumpin' the
Gunne, this album is a return to form. More than that,
actually -- the
replacement of founding guitarist Matt Andes with John Stahely resulted
in a tighter, more focused, and generally

Descriptionmore interesting band than ever before. Jo Jo Gunne was
originally formed to be, in Jay Ferguson's phrase, "a hard-ass rock
band," and on So...Where's the Show they finally were one. Ferguson
responded to the harder edge by abandoning the synthesizer in favor of
a jazzy piano sound, an inspired move under the circumstances.![]() ![]() ![]() |
![]() Ex "Spirit" band mates Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes formed "Jo Jo Gunne" shortly after Spirit’s classic Twelve Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus album, in Los Angeles, California, in 1971. Band Members
Following the first album, Mark Andes left the band and was replaced by
Jimmie Randall. Randall introduced a brighter bass sound and helped
increase the band's overall volume.
After the band released their 3rd album Jumpin' the Gunne, Matt Andes left. he was briefly replaced by Star Donaldson. A more permanent replacement was found in John Staehely, another formal Spirit member. Staehely's overdriven guitar was a complete change from Matt Andes's Ry Cooder style slide guitar. The band broke up in 1975. However they made several notable tracks, especially "Take It Easy", "Broken Down Man", "Neon City" and "Falling Angel". Ferguson went on to recorded several solo albums, including the hit singles "Thunder Island" and "Shakedown Cruise", and scored TV shows and mostly non-notable films. Andes joined Firefall and, later, Heart. Smith went on to have a successful career as a session drummer, and also played with Spirit in the 1980s and Boston from 1994 to 2000. The original line-up reformed in 2005, and began touring and recording again.
