| Keef eventually retired and moved back to the family home in Preston. He still makes the rare occasional appearance and has more recently produced his autobiography "Halfbreed" which is an insight into the first decade of Keef's career |
KEEF HARTLEY was born in England in 1944 . He began his career as a drummer with "Rory Storm and the Hurricanes" as a replacement for a guy named Ringo Starr ,who had moved on to another band . Hartley later joined "John Mayall's Bluesbreakers ". He is heard on three of Mayalls' albums . On the third one " Bare Wires" is a track titled "Hartley Quits", signaling the end of Hartleys' relationship with The Bluesbreakers. However the good natured banter
continued between
Hartley and Mr. Mayall . On Keef's debut
album
"Halfbreed" you can hear Mayall's voice on the first
track ""Hearts and Flowers", he is firing Hartley, then the last track
called sacked has Hartley firing Mayall.Hartleys band-mates changed very often . He said his band was like a jazz band in that the musicians were free to come and go and to play with any other band they wished . The Keef Hartley Band's jazz influenced blues is compared to "Blood, Sweat and Tears", and was a hit with his American fans . He always dressed as an American Indian for his stage shows. The Keef Hartley Band was a "Woodstock" act in 1969. Hartley has been inactive for many years except for an occasional show with John Mayall . He does have a website. |
