The Siegel-
Schwall
Band Facts

From 1966 until they disbanded in 1974, they ranked among the most important forces in reaching the baby boomer audience that sustains the blues to this day. The Siegel-Schwall Band also pioneered the cross-fertilization of the blues with other forms, performing Bill Russo's "Three Pieces For Blues Band and Symphony Orchestra" in 1968 with the San Francisco Symphony and The Boston Pops. Corky Siegel has continued this expansion of the blues with his project, Chamber Blues.

Facts
After a concert, It is not unusual for presenters and audience members to comment that this is the best sound they have ever heard in their house. Music teachers, renowned musicians and conductors, even with an aversion to amplification, comment that they surprisingly prefer the sound of our amplified acoustic instruments over the unassisted traditional set up. This is due to the fact that no matter how good the room sounds, the application of judicious amplification will make any room sound like an even better room.

The Siegel-Schwall Band was formed by Corky Siegel (harmonica and piano) and Jim Schwall (guitar), in 1964. Like Paul Butterfield, Siegel-Schwall were Chicago-based, They earned their spurs backing greats like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and Willie Dixon.

The band was the house band at Pepper's Lounge on Chicago's South Side. Every important Chicago blues musician sat in with Corky and Jim at Pepper's, including Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Billy Boy Arnold, Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Magic Sam, Otis Spann, Bo Diddley, Lazy Lester and Sam Lay, just to name a few. The band moved to Big John's in Old Town after the Butterfield Blues Band began touring and left a vacancy.

Corky Siegel

Corky Siegel's career began with a fortunate break when he formed the legendary Siegel-Schwall Band that toured the major rock palaces and clubs in the 60's and 70's. He has earned an international reputation as one of the world's great blues harmonica masters.
Corky has 18 recordings and over 35 reissues on: Vanguard, RCA, Alligator (the exclusively Blues label) and Gadfly Records, and two album projects for the prestigious classical label Deutsche Grammophon (DG).
Jim Schwall
The Boston Globe has called Jim Schwall "undoubtedly the best electric guitarist in the country." Schwall has recently recieved a PhD. in music, and has divided his time between performances and as a Professor of Music. Currently, Mr. Schwall lives in Madison where he was a candidate for Mayor of that city, as well as a high school subsititute teacher and a grad student in art at the University of Wisconsin. He has had many critically acclaimed shows of his photography work, and still plays the classic electrified Gibson B-25 acoustic guitar which he's used extensively since acquiring it in 1959.
Sam Lay
Sam Lay, Drummer, vocalist - is one of the most celebrated virtuoso drummers in blues history. In the mid 60's Mr. Lay was persuaded to join with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and recorded and toured extensively with this important blues group. Lay also recorded with Bob Dylan - most notably on the Highway 61 album.
In the late 1980's Sam Lay was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in Memphis. He was recently inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame in Los Angeles, and the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. He was nominated eight times for the coveted W. C. Handy Award for "Best Instrumentalist" including a recent 2005 nomination.
Rollo Radford
Rollo Radford began his professional career at the age of 19 when the legendary jazz vocalist, Dinah Washington, gave him his start. After a stint in the Army, he joined Martha and the Vandellas. He then became a member of the Siegel-Schwall Band recording 7 of their 12 albums on RCA, Alligator, and Deutsche Grammophon Records, and frequently performed at rock palaces such as Bill Graham's legendary Fillmore West.
Radford's televised performances include many appearances on NBC TV's rock show hit, Midnight Special with the great soul singer Walter Jackson, with blues legend Muddy Waters on the show Soundstage, and on Great Performances, with Siegel-Schwall, Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Symphony, and with rock and roll legend Chuck Berry. His latest TV appearance was with Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues on the ABC-TV series Missing Persons performing a piece of his own composition "Train".
Rollo Radford has a teaching degree and accreditation for teaching the behavior disordered students, and now divides his time between performances and teaching troubled youths in Chicago schools.
Later years...
The Siegel-Schwall band broke up in 1974 after releasing the album R.I.P. Siegel/Schwall, and reunited in 1987. Alligator Records signed them and released a live reunion album in 1988. The band continues to tour occasionally, usually during summer because Jim Schwall is now a professor of music. Schwall also ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Madison, Wisconsin. The Siegel-Schwall Band released a second album on Alligator Records in 2005, entitled Flash Forward, which was a top 15 hit on the Billboard Blues Albums chart.

In 1975 Siegel formed the Happy Year Band with Sam Lay, the late Albert Joseph on guitar and Rollo Radford on bass. Siegel later formed the ensemble Chamber Blues with a string quartet, tabla and harmonica/piano. This unusual group features Frank Donaldson, a 20-year veteran drummer with jazz musician Ramsey Lewis. Siegel continues to record, has earned several composing honors and is a regular performer and lecturer in the Chicago Public Schools. In 2007 he wrote a book, Let Your Music Soar: The Emotional Connection.

Facts
Corky Siegel uses a Hohner Special 20 Harmonica exclusively. "I like the mellow tone. It isn't the best for the real bluesy sound but it just seems to fit with the way I play. Instead of a wood comb, like the one in the Marine Band harmonica, the Special 20 comb is made of plastic. It stays smooth on my lips, doesn't hold the moisture like wood and doesn't expand and act like a cuisinart blade on the lips. I love Lee Oscar harps and recommend them also. My highest recommendation for anything regarding harmonicas, anything, is Joe Filisko. If you want to know the best harps for the way you play, I am not the one to ask because I may think in ways that may not work for your specific goals".

Facts
Hearing the blues greats perform live became a frequent event for me since Chicago was the world center for the blues and this is where they lived and played. And it was even greater good fortune for me, from the first moments of my own career in the blues, that I found myself performing with these world masters. One in particular captured most of my attention. They called him "the Howlin' Wolf". What I experienced was not just a great hulk of a blues man, nearing his 60's, climbing and rolling and grinning and sauntering across the bar room stage, throwing his huge hands into the smoky air, and growling out his tunes - but a spell-binding energy that was, raw, spontaneous, and sparkling, and poured out as an expression of his obviously deep love for his blues.
