1966 until they disbanded in 1974, they ranked among the most important
forces in reaching the baby boomer audience that sustains the blues to
this day. The Siegel-Schwall Band also pioneered the
cross-fertilization of the blues with other forms, performing Bill
Russo's "Three Pieces For Blues Band and Symphony Orchestra" in 1968
with the San Francisco Symphony and The Boston Pops. Corky Siegel has
continued this expansion of the blues with his project, Chamber Blues.Schwall Band Facts Schwall Band Facts After a concert, It is not unusual for presenters and audience members to comment that this is the best sound they have ever heard in their house. Music teachers, renowned musicians and conductors, even with an aversion to amplification, comment that they surprisingly prefer the sound of our amplified acoustic instruments over the unassisted traditional set up. This is due to the fact that no matter how good the room sounds, the application of judicious amplification will make any room sound like an even better room. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The Siegel-Schwall band broke up in 1974 after releasing the album
R.I.P. Siegel/Schwall, and reunited in 1987. Alligator Records signed
them and released a live reunion album in 1988. The band continues to
tour occasionally, usually during summer because Jim Schwall is now a
professor of music. Schwall also ran unsuccessfully for mayor of
Madison, Wisconsin. The Siegel-Schwall Band released a second album on
Alligator Records in 2005, entitled Flash Forward, which was a top 15
hit on the Billboard Blues Albums chart. In 1975 Siegel formed the Happy Year Band with Sam Lay, the late Albert Joseph on guitar and Rollo Radford on bass. Siegel later formed the ensemble Chamber Blues with a string quartet, tabla and harmonica/piano. This unusual group features Frank Donaldson, a 20-year veteran drummer with jazz musician Ramsey Lewis. Siegel continues to record, has earned several composing honors and is a regular performer and lecturer in the Chicago Public Schools. uses a Hohner Special 20 Harmonica exclusively. "I like the mellow
tone. It isn't the best for the real bluesy sound but it just seems to
fit with the way I play. Instead of a wood comb, like the one in the
Marine Band harmonica, the Special 20 comb is made of plastic. It stays
smooth on my lips, doesn't hold the moisture like wood and doesn't
expand and act like a cuisinart blade on the lips. I love Lee Oscar
harps and recommend them also. My highest recommendation for anything
regarding harmonicas, anything, is Joe Filisko. If you want to know the
best harps for the way you play, I am not the one to ask because I may
think in ways that may not work for your specific goals".Schwall Band Facts ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Siegel Schwall Band Facts Hearing the blues greats perform live became a frequent event for me since Chicago was the world center for the blues and this is where they lived and played. And it was even greater good fortune for me, from the first moments of my own career in the blues, that I found myself performing with these world masters. One in particular captured most of my attention. They called him "the Howlin' Wolf". What I experienced was not just a great hulk of a blues man, nearing his 60's, climbing and rolling and grinning and sauntering across the bar room stage, throwing his huge hands into the smoky air, and growling out his tunes - but a spell-binding energy that was, raw, spontaneous, and sparkling, and poured out as an expression of his obviously deep love for his blues. - Corky Siegel ![]() |
